My main interest in information design is helping scientists present their findings better. I’m happy to troubleshoot graphs, maps, and charts, and do one-off designs.
I maintain a site of data presentation tips for scholars, and am writing a book with the same title. See the site for makeovers, examples of good practice, and book reviews.
Since 1999 I’ve run workshops on the basics of data presentation around the world, including at Duke University, the National Center for Evolutionary Synthesis, and the University of Queensland. These are intended as a crash course in design for academics, who often find themselves having to present data visually without having had any training or experience in graphics or page layout. I also run workshops on Powerpoint, long document layout, design and typography essentials, and basic image editing (all links to PDF handouts).
